Enhavtabelo estas listo de titoloj, vortoj aŭ frazoj ('ĉefaĵoj') kaj asociataj indikiloj ('lokigiloj') al kiuj rilatas la utila materialo, kiu povas esti trovita en dokumento aŭ en paĝo. En tradicia lastapaĝa enhavtabelo la indikiloj inkludas nomojn de personoj, lokoj kaj eventoj, kaj konceptojn selektitajn de persono kiel gravaj kaj interesaj por ebla leganto de la libro. La indikiloj estas tipe paĝonombroj, paragrafnombroj aŭ sekcinombroj. En biblioteka katalogo la vortoj estas aŭtoroj, titoloj, temĉefaĵoj, ktp., kaj la indikiloj estas alvokaj nombroj. Interretaj serĉiloj, kiaj Google, kaj komplettekstaj serĉiloj helpas havigi aliron al la informo sed ne estas tiom selektema kiel indekso, ĉar ili havigas ne-gravajn ligilojn, kaj povas manki gravan informaro se ĝi ne estas frazigita en ĝuste la sama maniero kiujn oni esperis.[1]
