Nabucco

Nabucco ([naBUko] mallonge por Nabucodonosor, en Esperanto Nebukadnecaro) estas ital-lingva opero kvarakta komponita en 1841 de Giuseppe Verdi laŭ ital-lingva libreto fare de Temistocle Solera. Tiu libreto estis bazita sur la bibliaj historioj el la Libro de Jeremia kaj el la Libro de Daniel kaj sur la teatraĵo de 1836 de Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois kaj Francis Cornue, kvankam la baleta adaptaĵo de Antonio Cortese el la teatraĵo (kun ties necesaj simpligoj), ludita ĉe La Scala en 1836, estis pli grava fonto por Solera ol la teatraĵo mem. Sub ties origina nomo Nabucodonosor, la opero estis premierita ĉe La Scala en Milano la 9an de Marto 1842.

Nabucco estas la opero kiu estis konsiderata kiel firmigilo de la reputacio de Verdi kiel komponisto. He commented that "this is the opera with which my artistic career really begins. And though I had many difficulties to fight against, it is certain that Nabucco was born under a lucky star."

It follows the plight of the Jews as they are assaulted, conquered, and subsequently exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian King Nabucco (in English, Nebuchadnezzar II). The historical events are used as background for a romantic and political plot. The best-known number from the opera is the "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves," Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate / "Fly, thought, on golden wings," a chorus which is regularly given an encore in many opera houses when performed today.
