I thought all Esperanto nouns without exception had to end in -o and that -a is for adjectives. Is Ŝva a special case for some reason? — Hippietrail 05:35, 24. Jun 2005 (UTC)

I thought that the language of the Esperanto Wikipedia is Esperanto... well, you are right about nouns and o. We might consider "Ŝva" a proper name from another language (e.g. Russian) but I agree we should think about something with "o". I am not a phonetician and cannot say whether there is such a word in Esperanto yet.

HI, Hippietrail! There are indeed some exceptions to this rule. (Exceptions to a "logical" language? Well, I think this only proves Esperanto's vitality!) First and foremost, you've got Esperanto or Esperanticized proper names, like Zamenhof (iniciator of Esperanto), Persone (Esperanto rock band), Dolchamar (another E-band). Then you've got some words of other syntactic groups than nouns (adverbs, numerals) which for some reason are used in the function of nouns, e.g. hodiaŭ "today" in phrases like la mondo de hodiaŭ "today's world" (compare with la mondo de la futuro "the world of the future, the future's world"). And, not the least, you've got letter names: "a" in Esperanto is not ao, but simply a. In one of the largest Esperanto dictionaries, the PIV (Plena Ilustrita Vortaro), you find Greek letters called alfa, beta, and the like. You might consider ŝva belonging to this "letter name subclass of nouns". However, I think the title should be changed to ŝuvao, which certainly is in use in published linguistic works written in Esperanto. Bab 08:56, 24. Jun 2005 (UTC) Gekaraj!
