William Delmar O’Ryan, Jr, (Bill) was born in New York on March 16, 1944 to William, Sr. and Alicia Prann O’Ryan. He spent his childhood in the United States, Turkey and The Netherlands. For three years, he studied history at The University of Virginia before joining the Army. The Army trained him in Russian at The Defense Language Institute in Monterrey California prior to sending him to Ethiopia. Bill taught himself Tigrinya and Ge’ez, the native languages of Ethiopia.

While there, Bill met and married his first wife, Askalu. He backpacked through East Africa with his good friend, Marco for several months before returning to the United States with his family.

Bill settled in Madison Wisconsin and earned his bachelors degree in linguistics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He spent a couple of years in Minneapolis before moving to Phoenix Arizona. He endured, without complaining, a severe case of Rheumatoid Arthritis which was less painful in the dry heat of the Arizona desert.

He and his second wife, Fereshteh Taremi, taught Esperanto in Tempe for the Esperanto Society at Arizona State University.

Bill was multilingual speaking English, Tigrenya, Dutch, Spanish, Turkish, etc. He also learned a multitude of computer languages. He spent countless hours translating articles from English into Esperanto on Wikipedia.

Bill was a brilliant debater, had a tremendous sense of humor, and was compassionate. He was exceptionally well read and had an extensive library.

As his disease progressed, Bill kept fighting for independence and had multiple surgeries to keep him walking. Askalu moved to Phoenix to care for him in 2005 when his mobility became more limited.

Bill is greatly missed by those he left behind. He has joined his brother David who passed away in 1989 and his son Francis who passed away in 1997. He is survived by his sons: Micky, Patrik and Denny and daughters: Zowdi and Jemila as well as his siblings: Rick and Josephine. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Joshua, JJ, Izzy, Claudia, Leo, Emmanuel and Rafael. The void caused by his passing is enormous.

could you provide some dates in which years Bill was in the different places you told about ?

and about his second wife ? you tell his first wife moved to him when his mobility became more limited, but where was his second wife? is she still alive ? Her name seems iranian, is it ?

Here is what my brother, Rick, and Bill’s friend Marco and I came up with for a timeline of Bill’s travels.

• Bill was in Turkey from 1951 – 1952.
• He lived in The Netherlands from 1955 – 1960.
• Bill attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA from 1962 – 1965.
• He went into the Army in 1965 and was at the Defense Language School from 1966 – 1967.
• He went to Ethiopia from 1968 – 1973.
• Bill and Askalu moved to Madison Wisconsin in 1973.
• He was there until 1987 when he moved to Minneapolis.
• He lived in Minneapolis about 2 years so moved to Phoenix in 1989.
• He lived there from 1989 until his death.

Fareshteh (also goes by Angelina) Taremi is from Iran. They divorced sometime after they moved to Phoenix but continued to teach Esperanto together. She is still in the Phoenix area. What about Bill's professional activity after leaving Etiopia ? did he belong any more to army? did he have any job(s) ?

He worked for years on a Tigrinya/English dictionary. His good friend Marco says that he feels Bill was probably the premier expert on Tigrinya in the United States. He was always learning. He taught himself anything he was interested in. His interests included science, history and languages. I used to teach science and whenever he would call me and ask if I had heard about something scientific, I would groan because I knew he would ask me about something I didn’t yet know or about which I knew less than he did. He belonged to book clubs and would go whenever his body would allow him to.

When he discovered Wikipedia, he was excited to realize he could contribute so much. His hands were painful and he had lost a lot of his small motor skills but he painstakingly would type out his translated articles. He trained himself to use his left hand on the mouse because the right hand didn’t work so well. His Wikipedia contributions and his Tigrinya dictionary were reasons to keep fighting because he felt he was making a difference.

Do you know where his son Micky is currently living? I met him in 1985. I have something of his, he has something of mine. P Do you know where i can find his daughter jemila, I would like to tell her I miss her and her sons? I'm so sorry to here about your father, God bless you and your family ! SC
