Festa emblemo de Esperanto-vikipedio okaze de jubilea 100'000a artikolo

Today, June 15, 2008, at about 9:00 am GMT, the Esperanto Wikipedia reached 100,000 articles. Thus it joined the list of 20 Wikipedias whose article count surpassed 100,000. The jubilee article was about monfalsado (counterfeiting of money), added by the user Alaŭdo. That is undoubtedly a very important mark in the evolution of every Wikipedia, which has been attained by only 7.5% of all language versions. Considering their current growth rate, many of them are not expected to reach that point in 10 years. If the growth of the Esperanto Wikipedia continues to stay the same, the number of articles is expected to double again in 5 years.

It took almost 7 years, from November 2001 until June 2008, to reach 100,000 articles. During that time, the growth of the Wikipedia did not always occur with equal speed. Thanks to automatic uploading of stub articles about German cities, Italian communities, Brazilian cities, and stars, the number of stub articles in the Esperanto Wikipedia rapidly grew two times. However, when the count reached 80,000 articles, the community decided that automatic uploading of stubs compromised the quality of the encyclopedia, and they would not use that further. Because of that, more than one year passed from 80,000 until the magic number of 100,000 articles was reached.

Currently, out of the more than 100,000 articles in the Esperanto Wikipedia, only 165 have the status of elstara (featured) and 126 of status leginda (recommended reading). Although the Esperanto Wikipedia has over 5000 registered users, out of them only about 800 have made at least one contribution. The number of active Wikipedians, which have made at least 5 articles in a month or made more than 50 contributions, is only about 130 people, without calculating active bots. But a few people contribute to Wikipedia without registration, which is still not required.
