Li naskiĝis al familio de doganisto. Li pasigis sian infanaĝon en Vermonto kaj ekzamenis kolegion en Clarkson University [1].
Lia unua plenlonga filmo estis la Oscar-gajnanta Asphalt Cowboy, en kiu Walsh nur havis kroman rolon kiel buspasaĝero.
