Li estis verkisto de sciencfikcio; kaj verkis ankaŭ sub pseŭdonimoj, inter ili Richard Avery.
Forlasinte la lernejon 15-jaroj aĝa, li fariĝis laboristo, funkciulo kaj maristo en 1944. Post la dua mondmilito, li formiĝis kiel instruisto kaj komencis verki novelojn. Lia unua romano, Deadly Image (Mortiganta bildo), renomita poste The Uncertain Midnight (La duba noktomezo) aperis en 1958.
